5 Tips for a Budget-Friendly Visit to Jackson Hole in the Summer

    By Kristen Pope

Summer is peak season in Jackson Hole, but you don’t need to break the bank to have an incredible time in the Tetons.

Plan ahead to save on accommodations, transportation, food, activities, and even bear spray.

Tip 1: Save on Lodging and Camping

A number of Jackson and Teton Village properties offer lodging packages. Book early to receive a fourth night free, midweek deals, or add on activity passes. Jackson Hole Resort Lodging, Teton Mountain Lodge, and Snow King Resort offer a variety of deals throughout the summer.

Camping is also a great way to save (and connect with nature). A number of options are available in Grand Teton National Park’s campgrounds (which must be reserved ahead online) and in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Make sure you know how to safely camp in bear country, be prepared for inclement weather, and follow all rules and regulations. Check if campfires are allowed, and always follow best practices for fire safety.

Tip 2: Use Public Transportation and Bike

You don’t need to use your car your entire visit, and using more fuel-efficient transportation will actually save you money. To get from the airport to town, call your hotel or vacation rental office to check if they offer an airport shuttle. Jackson’s START Bus service offers free rides in town as well as low-cost service to Teton Village. Consider walking or renting a bike to get around town. Jackson Hole has an extensive array of multi-use pathways (nearly 70 miles worth), which go from town to Grand Teton National Park, Teton Village, Wilson, and beyond, so be sure to take a peek at the trail map.

    Tip 3: Eat Local

Take advantage of local lunch and happy hour specials to save, or opt for a picnic. Jackson Hole has two weekly farmers markets, the Jackson Hole Farmers Market on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-noon and People’s Market from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays for delicious and affordable eats.

Tip 4: Spend Time in the National Parks

Grand Teton National Park is the jewel of Jackson Hole, but you don’t have to spend a lot to enjoy this iconic treasure. Take advantage of the park’s half a dozen free entrance days throughout the year, or opt for an annual interagency pass for $80, with options for low-cost passes for seniors and free passes for military, fourth graders and their families, and people with disabilities. Enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, free ranger programs, and become a Junior Ranger. Learn about bear and wildlife safety if engaging in any outdoor activities in the area, and bear spray rentals are available at a number of locations (it’s cheaper to rent vs. buy).

Tip 5: Find Jackson’s Free (and Low-Cost) Activities

In town, explore the Town Square, take your photo with the famous antler arches, and then spend some time strolling through local shops with a stop at a coffee shop. Snow King Mountain offers an array of fun activities like the Cowboy Coaster, and Phil Baux Park (located right at the base of Snow King), has a number of free activities like bouldering and a playground.

In Wilson, Rendezvous Park is a popular spot to spend some time, and be sure to see Mami Mimi, a massive troll sculpture by artist Thomas Dambo. When the sun goes down, head to the Stilson parking lot (at the corner of Highways 22 and 390) to attend a Wyoming Stargazing free public program on Thursdays (donation suggested).

For more outdoor adventure, venture out to Teton Village to go hiking, mountain biking, and play a free 27-hole disc golf course. For musical enlightenment, enjoy Concerts on the Commons and check out Grand Teton Music Festival‘s events. Also, on Tuesdays, Teton Raptor Center offers an opportunity to meet their incredible birds at the Alive @ 5 programs.

However you spend your time, the memories you make will be priceless.
