    Grand Targhee In A Nutshell

    By Brigid Mander

Under the wide open, sunny slopes of the west side of the Tetons, an inconspicuous winding mountain road climbs up from Teton Valley, Idaho.

Aptly named Ski Hill Road, each curve adds anticipation. Whether it’s your first time ascending or your 1,000th, you anxiously await a small plateau revealing the hidden - but not exactly secret - world of Grand Targhee Resort.

Above are the stunning views of the west faces of iconic Teton peaks, but that’s not what attracts Grand Targhee’s devoted skiers. On the surface, it’s the fun, diverse terrain and legendary snowfall, but the true draw is deeper than that: the tangible incarnation of positively welcoming, joyful, low-key vibes, enchanting everyone from purists to fun hogs.

Each morning, people stream from the parking lots or the ski bus stop to the central patio to find friends, adjust gear, or grab a burrito and coffee to power up for the day. Here lies the energy of Targhee: unrushed, present, and completely open to the delights the day is sure to bring.

Targhee’s best doesn’t need any dressing up – access alone delivers all its gifts. And a major gift is Targhee’s location on the west side of the Tetons. It’s not just sunnier skiing and inviting terrain for all levels – it’s the recipient of the meteorological phenomenon of clouds dropping loads of snow before crossing the mountains. Match that with Targhee’s wonderfully low skier density, and you understand Targhee’s relaxed vibes. From zooming down the playful, banked children’s runs in the aspen forest, to powder turns on wide open faces, to lining up an ambitious air off one of Targhee’s plentiful features. Or maybe it’s the simple joy of trenching out big turns on some of the most scenic groomers in the west.

Targhee skiers come from down the road, over the pass, and even around the world, in search of world-class terrain and equally famous snow. It’s a place where the lift ops might be wearing cowboy hats – not for style, but because their summer gig is actually working the cows down in the valley. Or the couple on the chair ahead may be rocking 30-year old gear without irony, because skiing powder is, after all, a timeless activity. Parents and small children can be seen shredding everything from kids trails to big mountain terrain. Interwoven are destination skiers and snowboarders, modern freeriders, and telemark soul skiers. All these riders are the parts that form the unique and beloved ski culture of Grand Targhee, where you can be yourself however you like, as long as you are having a good time doing it.

When the lifts close at the end of each day, it seems as if everyone congregates back at the base. Some gather in the parking lot for apres parties, but the camaraderie of Grand Targhee most clearly converges at the Trap Bar. Live music, great après dishes, and celebratory libations – whether hot chocolate or local beers – along with the happy ambiance of a day well-spent are the only punctuation a Targhee day needs.
