    Jackson’s Top 10 Sustainable & Locally-Owned Restaurants

    By Britney Magleby

Jackson Hole: A Surprising Foodie Destination

Perhaps my highest criteria when it comes to judging a food scene is the destination's ability to showcase its culture through its cuisine. And this is where Jackson gets high marks!

When I walk into a coffee shop in Jackson Hole, I'm greeted with a friendly smile and a genuine conversation - something I've come to realize as a unique characteristic in small, mountain towns. When I sit down at a nice dinner restaurant, I can always find locally-sourced ingredients and western-inspired cuisine. And when I've thrown in the towel and walked out the door, I feel good knowing that Jackson's locally-owned businesses employ my fellow community members and give back to our economy.

While you can find delicious bites that represent Jackson Hole on almost every corner downtown, in Wilson, and in Teton Village, there’s a few that stand out specifically for their commitment to community and sustainability. Here’s 10 locally-owned restaurants in Jackson Hole who can brag about being Riverwind Foundation’s “Sustainable Business Leaders” and local favorites!

    Fine Dining in Jackson Hole

    Snake River Grill

This fine dining establishment is renowned for its innovative cuisine and dedication to the Jackson Hole community. A staple in the valley since 1993, Snake River Grill is widely recognized as the best restaurant in Jackson Hole. And I feel good about touting that accolade since they’ve given so much to Jackson’s restaurant scene, and local community, in their 32 years.

    Pica’s Mexican Taqueria

You can order sit-down or take-out food at this local Mexican restaurant just south of downtown Jackson. But if you sit down, order a margarita and find a seat at one of the larger tables where you’ll likely be surrounded with locals unwinding from a long day. This community-based restaurant gives back through their charitable support, including their title sponsorship of the famous Margarita Cup (a local ski race).

    Snake River Brewing

In the summer, Snake River Brewing’s lawn is busy with families playing games, sipping local beer, and snacking on homestyle cuisine. And the winter isn’t much different with locals flocking to this fun atmosphere, complete with darts and a massive upstairs that welcomes children. As Wyoming’s oldest brewery, Snake River Brewing has a longstanding commitment to community, always giving back to local causes and donating their kegs to hometown events.

    Grab-n-Go at Its Finest

    Healthy Being Cafe & Juicery

Organic, plant-based, and sustainably-sourced food is Healthy Being’s speciality. The small, cabin-style building is always packed with locals enjoying vitamin-loaded juices, protein-rich salads, and vegan cheesecake. Persephone & Picnic Bakery

These beloved bakeries, owned by the same family, prioritize community in all that they do. A local’s line proves that they take care of their own, and they were one of the first spots to bring coffee shop working to a comfortable atmosphere in Jackson. Jedediah’s at the Airport

Food that you can feel good about putting in your body, with service that you can feel good about supporting, can be difficult to find in an airport. But JAC isn’t any airport. Jedediah’s, the only full-service restaurant inside the Jackson Hole Airport, offers genuinely good food served by local employees who seem to really love their jobs. And the owner, a long-time local and member of the Wyoming State Senate, is relentless in making Wyoming a better place to live and visit.

    Cowboy Coffee

Few things are better than really good coffee on a cold morning in the mountains. And few places do it better than Cowboy Coffee. But beyond good coffee and great grab-and-go food, Cowboy Coffee truly represents Jackson Hole culture. They give back to local nonprofits and their friendly baristas make you feel like family.

Finding locally-owned, unqiue places to eat is one of my favorite parts of travel. I love walking into a restaurant and realizing I can’t get this anywhere else.

While a number of factors play into that realization – variety of food, locally-sourced ingredients, hometown atmosphere, and excellent service – it’s mostly a gut feeling. Do I feel welcome? Am I proud to support this business? Do I believe I’m contributing to this town’s wellbeing? At these ten Jackson Hole restaurants, I believe the answer is yes!
