Our chilly winters are perfect for outdoor ice skating rinks. Skate in the neon glow cast by the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar’s bucking bronc logo on the Town Square or in Teton Village at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. If you want to ice skate protected from the elements, try the indoor ice arena at Snow King Sports & Events Center. Home of the Moose hockey team, the indoor rink has public skate hours from noon to 1:30 pm, Monday to Friday beginning in the winter season.

Outdoor gear can be expensive and not all that sustainable if it sits in the garage or a closet most of the year. Renting equipment at a local shop like Teton Backcountry Rentals is easy and reliable, but you might also consider local snowboarding legend Travis Rice’s Sendy app, an online marketplace and gear hub that lets individual users buy, sell, and rent adventure sports equipment. Kit Lender is another online winter clothing rental service that ships equipment to wherever you’re going. Headwall Sports in Jackson is a well-stocked outdoor gear consignment store where you can outfit your crew with lightly used, high-quality local finds all year round.

The easiest way to take care of yourself in Jackson Hole is to stay hydrated. You can get dehydrated at any elevation, but it’s particularly easy to do at higher elevations. Being active in the mountain sun and wind can exacerbate dehydration. Dehydration can range from a dry mouth to a much more serious problem. Every summer, the Teton County Search and Rescue team responds to several rescues from dehydrated adventurers. How much water you should drink depends on your weight and activity level, but aim for 4 liters a day. If you’re active or drink a lot of caffeine and alcohol, drink more water. Extra credit for adding electrolytes to your water.
